Mistletoe Tradition

The name mistletoe comes from two Anglo Saxon words ‘Mistel’ which means dung and ‘Tan’ which means stick. The translation of Mistletoe means ‘Poo on a stick’. Disregarding the meaning, people still hang mistletoe to show signs of love to their significant other.

The tradition of hanging Mistletoe in the house goes back to ancient times of Druids. It was said to possess mystical powers which bring good luck to the household and ward off evil spirits. In Norse mythology it was used as a sign of love and friendship, – that’s where the custom of kissing under mistletoe originates.

Because of the arrival of Christians in Western Europe, some people tried to ban it’s use as decoration in churches but many still continued to use it. The way Mistletoe was used is that people could pick a berry, then be kissed. Once all the berries had gone, there could be no more kissing.
