We’re All Faking It
This past Sabbath I had the opportunity to play with the praise team at Remix. Now what is Remix? Simply put, it’s an iterative church experience (in a sense). Some people just refer to it as a contemporary church service for teens (even though people from all ages attend). If you are interested in attending, check out the site here.
I have been privilege to play on the praise team quite a few times now as a part of the group “So They Tell Me” whose current members are Edyn-Mae Stevenson as lead singer (and occasionally on the keys), Gillian as our harmony vocals, Hannah Mott on the guitar, Devin Crowley on the bass, DeAnna Brown on the box drum, and myself, Sabrina Mapes on the violin.
This past Sabbath we played five songs that we put a lot of work into learning prior to the service. We met twice at Edyn-Mae’s house to go over the program and would run over it several times. But something that we tell the people who as us “how we play so good” is actually this (now pay attention because this is the secret that all musicians use)…
So how do we do it? Easy.
We’re all faking it.
Quite literally actually. I think the only necessary thing is to know your instrument enough and understanding the musicians and their parts and knowing how to freestyle. Here’s the truth to how I play violin with a band (which isn’t super common, but common nonetheless). I have been playing violin for around twelve years now so I’ve developed this thing called a musical ear. Basically I just listen to what other people are playing an make up my own notes to go along in that particular key. Once I’ve got down the key and the notes that sound well I just make up some order of playing them in a certain manner and fashion and somehow they fit.
Yup, that’s basically it.
Yes, it took lots of years of work in practicing (even though I totally slacked in that area too) but I believe that it’s a gift from God that I’m able to contribute to His ministry and work with the violin.
