My Music Clinic 2016 Experience

On March 31, 2016 I woke up bright and early and loaded all the stuff into the car with my family. We were headed to Pine Tree Academy in Maine where my sister and I would attend Music Clinic 2016 with hundreds of other students ranging from all ages up into the twelfth grade. I was especially excited about this year’s clinic because I was going to play viola with the orchestra instead of violin like I have in the past. I also decided to try choir for the first time this year as well.

Now some of you may be asking what Music Clinic is. Music Clinic takes place at Pine Tree Academy in Maine and is basically held over the course of a weekend (Thursday to a Sabbath evening). Students up to the twelfth grade are able to attend (as well as adults). Each student has a sponsor who is responsible for helping with making the food for people as well as keeping track of the kids they’re responsible of. Students spend a majority of the day practicing for the three concerts that take place over the course of the weekend.

Anyways, once we arrived we checked in and prepared ourselves for the weekend. We mentally prepared ourselves to practice songs for hours on end for the Friday night performance, the Church performance, and the Sabbath evening performance (AKA, the Grande Finale).

For every period I would switch back and forth between strings and choir, and I even tried out for a singing solo in This Land Is Our Land. I got into the finals, but I accidentally forgot to look up from my music and got disqualified… But that’s another story.

In the end the finale was amazing and everything went great! I was able to learn the staff for the viola better than I had before I’d gone. I improved my skills on the instrument itself too (though it’s not much different from a violin. You can learn more about my switch from violin to viola here.)

Ultimately I would suggest Music Clinic for those who are interested in furthering their skills in the instrument/voice. Though it’s a lot of work it pays off, especially when you experience that Grand Finale!

Have you ever attended a Music Clinic? (There’s been over 30 so far, so I’m sure there’s a lot of people out there who have!) Share your thoughts in the comments below!

About Sabrina N. Mapes

There are only so many people who can say they're fans of pirates, superheroes, and violin pop; I am one of them. Some would describe me as spontaneous, others a spazz, and some a caffeine addict... that last one is no longer true.
