Times Square New Years Eve
Every year for New Years Eve, many families and friends find themselves in Manhattan, New York. The first Times Square New Years Eve was celebrated in 1904. The reason for this celebration was because NYC was going through several changes. A major change was the opening of the Subway Line in New York. Each year on December 31st, Manhattan sets the ball. Ten seconds before January 1st, the ball starts to lower towards the ground meaning that the previous year is very close to an end. The ball isn’t just a boring old disco ball. It is 12 feet in diameter, geodesic sphere that weighs 11,875 pounds. The ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles. Families all around the U.S. love to go to see the ball drop. It is very important to many people because it shows the start of the new year.
