SLA Brings Back Baseball for a Second Season!
Thirteen years is a long time for a sport to be absent from an athletic program. Thats how long SLA wasn’t involved with baseball, until last year! This spring season will be the second year that SLA offers baseball. To progress and succeed you need to start all the way from the bottom. That is exactly what coaches Jeffrey Lambert, Jay Diller, Josh Simulus, and Chris Irrgang are doing with the high school students. They expect to teach baseball fundamentals and expect dedication to the sport!
Tryouts were held in the SLA gym on March 3rd and 4th, because of the built up snow still covering the outdoor fields. Approximately 25 students were interested in joining the team, and 15-20 students actually showed up to practice. The coaches needed to test the players to evaluate their level of play. The players were tested in catching, throwing with accuracy, reflexes, batting, speed and pitching. Each coach worked carefully to get the most out of each of the players’ potential.
Last Season, the crusaders faced a tough challenge. They had a season record of 4 wins and 9 losses. On a bright side, the coaches see big potential this year with the boys who tried out for the team, whether they were new players or old ones coming back for the second year. Also, the team looks forward to be facing familiar teams like AMSA, Assabet Regional and Parker Charter. Those schools have been always connected with the SLA athletics program, and the SLA coaches expect their team to be on their level this year.
The volunteering coaches will be committing and sacrificing their time to help resurrect this sport from the ground. Although, it is being competed in a junior varsity league they expect to move to varsity in the next couple of years after the underclassman students have matured into the sport with a bit more experience.
SLA will be starting practices routinely right after Spring Break/Mission Trip. It will be on a Tuesday and Thursday schedule from 5:00-7:00PM. Games days will vary from Monday to Thursday.
What do you think of SLA having a baseball team again?
