Organ Harvesting Cartel Discovered in Mexico
On Monday, March 17, Mexican police arrested a member of the Knights Templar cartel on charges of kidnapping and murdering children for organ harvesting. This shocking report of human-trafficking is no new story. In 2013, a Somalian girl was rescued from the UK where her captors intended to put her to the knife, and that isn’t even the beginning.
In fact, some estimate that 42% of donated organs are actually from the black market. From tricking the poor into selling their organs, to getting actual willing participants, to kidnapping young children and adults, the organ market is a thriving business. Kidneys being the most expensive selling at nearly 40,000 dollars, and a heart ranging in pay from 1,000 to 2,000 British pounds.
Organ harvesting has also taken its place among urban legends. Tourists claim to have woken up in their bathtubs with ice packs on a stitched-up wound where their kidney used to be. Stories of bodies filled with nothing but newspapers and men dying of morphine overdoses with an unfortunate absence of their liver.
But this brings up an excellent point. As humans, we have a higher call to respect the lives of others and the lives of ourselves. Everyone knows that human trafficking for the sex trade and for slavery is still a big problem worldwide today, but not very many people think of human trafficking for the organ market.
Taking anything that doesn’t belong to us is wrong. Stealing an organ- stealing a life – that’s a sin against God, no matter how much someone is willing to pay. And as for ourselves, we are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Overall, the love and compassion we have for our fellow human-kind should outweigh any greed or selfish desires that we have. “In everything, therefore, treat people in the same way you would want them to treat you.” Matthew 7:12
So, how much is a kidney worth to you?
