What does E.G.W. say about Halloween?
Ellen G. White never says anything directly regarding Halloween but she does talk about spiritualism. Spiritualism is the belief that spirits of the dead have an after life; and can communicate with the living specifically through some sort of medium. Halloween may just seem like a day of sweets and candy; but is the devil just trying to sugar coat something evil? His lies are deceitful and ruthless; it is essential to have truth to stand upon.
Halloween also know as “Samhain” started of as a pagan holiday celebrated by pre-Christian, Celtic people. The Druids, devil worshiping priests, on October thirty-first of every year believed that ghosts of the dead would mingle with the living. These priests would then initiate insane sacrificial ceremonies that varied from fruits to humans to please the gods. Then the people would have a huge bonfires ceremonies in honor of the dead.
As time passed Christian missionaries in Europe wanted to convert the Celts to Christianity. Pope Gregory the first starting “wiping out” pagan holidays decided to conform with their customs. In order to convert them he had his missionaries “consecrate” their practices to Christ and allow them to continue their worship. Their policy was to diminish but not totally remove their belief in traditional gods. Customs intermingled and the Celtic underworld became the Christian hell. Eventually Samhain was obliterated but transformed to All Saints Day on November first.
Modern Halloween is defined as the evening of October 31; the eve of All Saints Day; observed especially by children in costumes who solicit treats. (Dictionary.com) Costumes of devils, vampires, witches, sorcerers, demons; then of course sugar-coated by princesses, pumpkins, and fairies. As children of Christ who are they truly representing?
Ellen White says in The Great Controversy chapter 30 the following, “I saw the rapping delusion. Satan has power to bring the appearance of forms before us purporting to be our relatives and friends that now sleep in Jesus. It will be made to appear as if they were present, the words they uttered while here, which we were familiar with, will be spoken, and the same tone of voice which they had while living will fall upon the ear. All this is to deceive the world, and ensnare them into the belief of this delusion.” The druids believed in this deception which was the beginning of this “holiday”.
She then goes on to say, “I saw that the saints must have a thorough understanding of the present truth, which they will have to maintain from the Scriptures. They must understand the state of the dead…we must examine well the foundation of our hope, for we shall have to give a reason for it from the Scriptures; for we shall see this delusion spreading, and we shall have to contend with it face to face. And unless we are prepared for it, we shall be ensnared and overcome.”
It is imperative that we know the truth as foundation to withstand evil. Halloween is presented in such a friendly light it is easy to be fooled. Let us not choose to be ignorant and stay comfortable; lest we end up as dupes in our world against the devil.
Ellen White has a vision that goes like this, “I saw the rapidity with which this delusion was spreading. A train of cars was shown me, going with the speed of lightning. The angel bade me look carefully. I fixed my eyes upon the train. It seemed that the whole world was on board. Then he showed me the conductor, who looked like a stately fair person, whom all the passengers looked up to and reverenced. I was perplexed, and asked my attending angel who it was. Said he, It is Satan. He is the conductor in the form of an angel of light. He has taken the world captive. They are given over to strong delusions, to believe a lie that they may be damned. His agent, the next highest in order to him, is the engineer, and others of his agents are employed in different offices as he may need them, and they are all going with lightning speed to perdition. I asked the angel if there were none left. He bade me look in an opposite direction, and I saw a little company traveling a narrow pathway. All seemed to be firmly united, and bound together by the truth.
This little company looked care-worn, as though they had passed through severe trials and conflicts. And it seemed as if the sun had just appeared from behind the cloud, and shone upon their countenances, and caused them to look triumphant, as though their victories were nearly won.”
Let us stand victorious at the end with Christ, but only truth can bring us there. Do you want to be in that little company? The people who chose God instead of the devil? Tell the pioneer your view on Halloween and comment any questions you have on the subject, the pioneer will do their best to answer.
