How To Prevent The Spreading Flu Epidemic
With the fresh start in the new year of 2013, the influenza virus has been widespread throughout New England. Influenza is a viral infection that targets the respiratory system with symptoms showing in the nose, lungs, and throat. The flu that has been circling this winter also affects the stomach, which can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Recent studies have shown that the flu is more easily spread in cold weather. Due to last year’s very mild winter the flu season was also mild as a result. This year we have not been as fortunate, and have had very cold weather resulting in the return of the flu with a vengeance.
The flu mostly targets young children, older adults, pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and those with chronic illnesses. Having a flu epidemic does not just affect those who catch the illness but the cost of producing vaccines becomes very expensive for the U.S. Government. Between work, school, and everyday life it is hard to escape catching any illness. Luckily, The South Lancaster Academy Pioneer recently dug a little deeper to find easy ways to avoid getting sick and keeping healthy during this season. In addition to modern health tips we will take a look at what Seventh-Day Adventist pioneer, Ellen White had to say about avoiding sickness.
Remember what our mothers always told us? Statements like “Wash your face and hands!”, ” Keep your fingers off your face”, and “cover your mouth!”. These are the fundamental things to remember at all times of the year, especially during the flu season. So remember your mother’s advice!
Doctors also recommend taking vitamin C, echinacea, lemon tea, and other natural remedies when feelings of a run down immune system occur. If you have symptoms of a stomach flu take charcoal tablets or the liquid powder.
In many of Ellen G. White’s health books she repeatedly tells individuals to keep their body clean, get enough rest, stay hydrated, eat right and healthy, keep a positive attitude, avoid grudges, and exercise. All of the tips Ellen G. White offered coincide perfectly with what researchers are saying, along with avoiding sick people as much as possible, getting the flu vaccine, and avoiding community cups and food.
Illnesses and sicknesses are everywhere we go and often hard to avoid. Luckily, God gave us the easy part, he provided the tips and rules to prevent from sickness. All we have to do is follow them. In Exodus 15:26 God promises, ” If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”
Be sure not to waste time running from sickness, but be sure to enjoy this beautiful winter season God gave us
