SLA Offers Basic Auto Mechanics For First Time Since 2010

For the second half of the 2012-13 school year students at South Lancaster Academy will be able to take basic auto-mechanics as an elective. This is significant because SLA hasn’t had auto-mechanics as an elective since 2010.

The auto-mechanics class was taught by a community member, Mr. Gene Hartlett. Mr. Hartlett was the former owner of Gene’s Five Star Auto Body in Clinton MA. Unfortunately he passed away in a car accident in 2010 and without a replacement the program ceased to function.  This year, P.E. teacher Mr. Dustan Cook has offered to teach the class.

The SLA Pioneer took the time to sit down with some students and who were signed up for auto-mechanics and Mr. Cook and asked them how they felt about the class and what they were looking forward to gaining from it.

Mr. Cook: “I’m looking forward. I want the kids to have the skills that are necessary to have when you own a car.”

Junior Xoyoan Colon: “I’m really excited about it! I’m looking forward to learning more about cars.”

Junior Izak Cordova: “I’m looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to getting to know more about cars and what I can do if there’s a problem with my own car.”

Senior Helio Fereirra: “I’m really excited about it. I’ve been waiting for years to take this class. I’m looking forward to having fun and learning about cars.”

Sophomore Lisa Gifford: “I’m really excited for it. I won’t have to depend on anybody else to fix my car.”

As you can see SLA is happy to have its auto-mechanic class back. Hopefully students will be able to gain knowledge of cars and be able to apply it to their own lives. If you’re a student at SLA how do you feel about having auto-mechanics back? Leave a comment below!
