SLA Crusaders Break the Keefe Tech Broncos
The SLA Lady Crusaders Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball played their season opener on Thursday, December 6, 2012, with the JV winning 22-21 and the Varsity 49-17. The Keefe Tech Broncos were a new team for the Crusaders to play. The Broncos are a Division 3 team, the same as the Crusaders, but are in a different league. Both Crusader teams were able to come away with strong showings for these games.
The JV game was anything but dull. It was a rather low scoring game, with the Broncos holding the lead at the end of the first quarter 6-5. The Crusaders took the lead of 8-7 by half time. The second half of the game occurred the same way, with both teams exchanging control of the lead. With only a few seconds remaining on the clock the score was 20-17 in favor of the Crusaders. The Broncos scored a buzzer 3-pointer tying up the score, sending the match to overtime.
The overtime clock time was put up, and the squads had four minutes to compete for the win. No scoring occurred for the first few minutes until the Broncos made a jump shot, grabbing the lead. With a minute left on the clock the Crusaders point guard, Rosie Collado drove in for a lay up, tying the score yet again. SLA played tight defense on the next trip, with Rosie Collado again pulling down a rebound and was fouled with only eight seconds left in the game. She made the second free throw shot, giving SLA a one-point lead. The Crusaders held on for the final shot and came out with the win. Isadora Ferreira and Rosie Collado were the leading scorers for the Crusaders.
The Varsity game was a much higher-scoring affair, but did not contain nearly the same amount of energy from the crowd. The Varsity Lady Crusader’s were clearly more prepared than the Lady Bronco’s, and that preparation showed in the score. By halftime the Crusaders held a lead of 20-12 over the Broncos, and continued to grow their lead in the second half. The final score was 49-17. Senior Center Melodie Kukome lead the Crusaders with 17 points, while Junior Forward Elena Shand added 16.
The Lady Crusaders were ready for these games and it left both varsity and junior varsity squads with a positive outlook for the rest of the 2012-13 season.
