Are Homosexuality and Christianity A Good Pair?
In popular shows such as; Glee, Grey’s Anatomy, Game of Thrones, Revenge, Pretty Little Liars, Dexter, The Office, and many other shows, it is not uncommon to have homosexual or bisexual characters. In the media, being homosexual or bisexual is portrayed as being commonplace, acceptable, and even sometimes as the “cool” thing to do. The influence portrayed from the media and the official stance from many Christian faiths can contradict though. The Seventh Day Adventist church, recognizes that every human being is valuable in the sight of God, and seek to minister to all men and women in the spirit of Jesus. The church also believes that sexual intimacy belongs only within the marital relationship of a man and a woman. This was the design established by God at creation in Genesis 2:24, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. The SLA Pioneer decided to take a deeper look to see whether or not the act of homosexuality and being bisexual is indeed okay according to Biblical standards.
Many parts of the Bible bring up the topic of homosexuality. In 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 is says, ” Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
Also, in Leviticus 20:13, it says, ” If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”
Taking from the above verses, the act of homosexuality is looked down upon in the Bible. A huge common misconception many people have are that the sexual immoral desires are the sin. The desires itself are not the main problem. We all have desires to commit sins. While they may not necessarily be sexual desires, they are still sins. If the desires have been instilled in a person since as long as can be remembered, they should ask God to take them away, and not act upon the wrong desires, regardless of the details.
People often look down upon the church and their approach to homosexuality, because they believe that the church will kick them out and not be accepting of their lifestyle. Some churches do kick them out, but not every church is the same. The SLA Pioneer, sat down with a few SLA students and asked them their thoughts on homosexuality and Christianity. Questions included their opinion on the lifestyle, if they have friends who are homosexual, and if they are do they have a chance of going to heaven and if the church should still let them in.
Junior, Isaac Valera, responded to the three questions by saying, ” I think homosexuality is wrong, because it says so in the Bible. I don’t have any homosexual friends that I know of, but if I did I wouldn’t look at them any differently and would treat them with respect. Whether or not they go to heaven is not my choice to make, because I am in no position to judge, because they are just as sinful as anyone else.”
Senior, Nadia Bastien, answered by saying, ” I think the act is wrong, but I won’t condemn anyone who is. I have a few bisexual friends, and I am still their friend. I believe that if they know the act of homosexuality is wrong and they do it in the sight of the Lord, then they won’t go to heaven but the church should definitely let them in in attempts to correct their wrongdoings.”
In the Bible it does say that the act of homosexuality is wrong, and the Bible also says that all sin is wrong, and it also states in Romans 3:23, that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Taking that into account, is being homosexual a bigger sin than lying? The wages of all sin is death, but through Jesus Christ, eternal life can be achieved. Sin is wrong and so is homosexuality, but if you have Jesus and are trying to overcome the wrongdoing, will either keep you out of heaven?
