Season Preview For the Crusader Basketball Teams
As we approach the middle of November many people begin to anticipate the start of basketball season. For many years basketball has been the most popular sport at SLA as the team has enjoyed success in the MIAA. The girl’s squad has steadily improved with each season, and the boys have enjoyed a run of dominance with four straight playoff appearances.
For the first time in almost 4 years, SLA will field a girls junior varsity basketball team. When asked about what she thought the girls J.V. focus will be for this season, Junior Jennifer Sierra said, ” Their goal is probably going to be coming together, developing their skills, learning about the game, and working hard to be next year’s powerhouse.”
The girls varsity is ready for a good season. Despite the loss of guard Kyrsti Cotton to graduation, the girls feel confident. “We have a lot of potential. I think we’ll win even though we lost Kyrsti. But we have Elena and Melodie who are angels under the hoop. We have good shooters too. I think we’ll do well in the upcoming tournament” said Junior Deanna Howard.
After a disappointing season last year, the boys J.V. is ready to apply all of their experience and development gained throughout last year. “I’m looking forward to having fun. I think we’re a lot stronger than we were last year and I think we’ll do a lot better than we did last year.” stated freshmen Leonardo Zamo.
Following a very successful season where the team made it to the second round of the playoffs, the guys varsity is ready to take their performance to the next level. However, a repeat will not be easy due to the loss of team captain Brett Gustafson and Senior Adrian Olivera’s injury. Despite these obsacles, the guys still feel confident.
“I think we’re gonna do well. It’s gonna be harder since Adrian won’t be playing a lot but I think we have enough around us to do well,” said Junior Kofi Omane.
Clearly everyone’s pumped for the new season. All I can say is GO CRUSADERS!
